Give it your best shot

Posted by Hannah on

They say ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’ but whilst networking online that isn’t the case. Whether applying for jobs or networking for clients, we have a very short amount of time online to make a good first impression, and professionalism is key.

This week we’re focussing on headshot photography, how your profile picture is doing the talking for you, what it is saying and why a professionally taken headshot is the best way to get noticed.

What does your profile picture say about you?

Just like how we think about what to wear to an interview and understand the importance of ‘dressing to impress’ in person, the image you portray online should give the same professionalism. But that doesn’t mean you have to dust off the suit from the back of the wardrobe, it’s important to show the style you want to portray online and style your headshot to the audience you want to attract.

Styling your headshot to show your personality will make you more memorable and ‘put a face to the name’ which means you are more likely to stay top of peoples mind when a project or job becomes available.

As a designer, Hannah always makes sure her personality shows through in her headshot.

A standard head and shoulders shot isn’t always the best answer for your personal brand, you can easily show your personality and creativity through poses, colour and props.

Be You and Stand out from the crowd

You can also tie in your brand colours through your clothing, like Hannah did with her jumper above or the colour of the backdrop in Lucy’s photo below.

Saying that, if you are applying for a job in the corporate world – You best suit up!

Why pro headshots are best

Making a (small) financial investment in a professional photo shows that you take yourself and your career seriously.

Many people are still relying on poor quality phone selfies, recruiters and clients will take a closer look if you’re sharing a high resolution profile picture. Investing in a professional headshot for your LinkedIn profile or website doesn’t just ensure you are well lit and in high definition, it speaks to potential employers and clients. It says this person has put in time, effort and money to look professional and presentable and that gives the impression that you will follow that through in-person.

A professional photographer will make you feel more confident by getting the most flattering angles, pose and lighting to make you look your best.

Consistency

Okay, so you have a professional headshot… but what about the rest of your team?

When clients are adding you and your team on LinkedIn or browsing the about page on your website, do you all look like you are part of the same team? Or even worse – was your headshot taken at your previous employment and you still look like you are a part of that team?

Consistent headshots with the same backdrop and lighting is a simple and effective way to make your team stand out.

Keep it up to date

We’ve all been there and clung onto a profile picture a few years longer than we should… but we aren’t fooling anyone. Keep your profile picture up to date and looking like you.
